The Scents of Home

Who doesn’t love arriving home, after a long day at work, to a lovely, fragrance-filled home? You open your front door, to find that you are being greeted by a soft aroma, unique to you and your dwelling. The scent produced by scented oil might carry on to the living room, bath room and bedroom – all areas where you can lose yourself in the calm of your lovely, scent-filled rooms. But how does one go about transforming a home or even a room into a haven of rich aroma? You will need to learn a bit about different scented elements, first.

There are a variety of things to use to make your own dreamy spaces. These include essential oils, fragrance oils, scented oils, scented candles, reed diffusers, and more!
Which one you will want to use depends on your personal tastes and how you want to use the fragrances within your home. For some helpful information to get you started on learning the basics of aromatherapy for the home, please read on.

Essential oil is just what the name declares: essential oil, or basic, fundamental oil. Essential oils are an oil-based product that has an infused scent in it. Usually, it is one scent, like lavender, or rose, but sometimes essential oils can have a mixture of several different scents combined in one bottle.
Although there are many to choose from, you will need to smell them to decide which ones are right for you.
Essential oils are strong and concentrated. Usually, they are used to make other scented things: mixed in a carrier oil to make scented oils; added to wax to make scented candles; or combined with glycerine and other ingredients to make soap; or used in tiny quantities all on their own.

Fragrance oil is a lot like its sister, essential oil, in that it is concentrated and used as an additive for making other things, like: scented candles, soap, and potpourri. But it can also be used alone in your oil burner or salt lamp, or reed diffuser. Both essential oils and fragrance oils can be found in aromatherapy shops, health food shops, candle shops, on-line, and in some beauty shops that carry candles and room fragrances.

Scented oil is made from essential oil. It is less concentrated and lighter. You can make your own scented oil by mixing a few drops of essential oil in with an oil base, or ‘carrier’ oil. By making your own scented oil, you will be able to make a unique scent all your own! Scented oils are good when used in lamp rings placed on top of a light bulb in your lamp. When the bulb heats up, the ring gets hot and the oil is diffused into the air.

Of course, a wonderful way to invigorate and infuse the air in your home with fabulous scent is to use scented candles. Scented candles come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colours, and fragrances. They add not only scent to a room, but warmth of candlelight when burning, and colour to the room when just used as an embellishment to the decor. The stronger the scent, the more the candle will add fragrance to the room. Some candles have such a strong scent that even when not lit, they will add fragrance to the room. But in most cases, burning your scented candles enhances the fragrance and fills your room with aroma – not to mention a bit of romance, too.

It seems the latest craze to hit the marketplace is something called reed diffusers. Reed diffusers are a good solution for aromatherapy in places where it is better to not apply heat or flame to scent the room. Reed diffusers are small reeds that are fitted in a container, (usually a vase of some sort) in which scented oil has been placed. They work by ‘wicking’ the oil up the reed and into the air. They can last for several months before the oil needs replacing. Turning your reeds in the reed diffuser periodically will help to keep the scent fresh and evenly distributed.

For every home there is a way to use aromatherapy with essential oils, fragrance oils, scented candles, and reed diffusers. Make your home a haven for wonderful scents that will leave you always with warm memories of home.

Selection of Scented Oils

Are you currently into candle making? Do you enjoy walking into a local craft store and enjoying the aromic smells from the many scented candles which they have to offer? If so you should be using scented oils in your own candle creations.

No scented candle project would be inclusive without the addition of scented oils or as they are often referred to in some circles as perfumed oils. These various aromic liquids are highly concentrated and the better versions contain no water or alcohol which frequently affects the natural fragrance of the selected scent.

It is important that when you purchase your scented oils that you obtain those fragrances which are made from the purest of ingredients that you can find. Avoid those perfumed scents which are cheaply made and often contain fillers which would promptly spoil. These types of additives significantly reduce the life span of the product as well as providing you with a poor quality end item. Pure scented oils on the other hand will retain their original fragrance for numerous years.

Scented oils that are being reserved for your hand-made candles should always be stored in a small glass bottle as glass tends to preserve the aroma and the original scent. Granted, plastic bottles may be suitable for some types of lotions that contain scented oil in it or even similar products, they are simply not appropriate for storage of quality scented oils of any sort. Pure scented oils tend to break down when stored in plastic due to various chemical reactions which take place. As a result of this chemical decomposition the perfumed oils will loose its robust strength and end up with a weaker smell. The use of dark, amber glass containers is often recommended in order to protect the valuable oils from excessive light.
